V&A East Museum opened on 18 April 2026 in London’s Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Its permanent galleries place making at the centre of a museum visit, connecting objects with the ideas and circumstances behind creative work.
The V&A’s opening announcement describes two free galleries called Why We Make, drawing together art, architecture, design, performance and fashion. The museum’s current website confirms that it is open. General admission is free, while some exhibitions and events have separate charges.
Looking across disciplines
For a designer or educator, a collection arranged around a question can offer a useful exercise: choose two objects from different fields and compare the decisions they make visible. A garment and a chair might prompt questions about structure, movement or the relationship between a body and a material. Similarities can begin a discussion, while differences keep the comparison precise.
Documentation matters here. A short note on an object’s original use, maker and setting gives a comparison a firmer basis than appearance alone. In a teaching session, participants could first describe what they can observe, then identify what they would need to research. This separates a visual response from a historical claim without limiting the questions that an object can generate.
