About IADC

Creative Practice and Exchange

The International Arts & Design Council (IADC) is a platform for exchange across art, design, education and research. We aim to bring people from different cultural and professional backgrounds together to share practice, examine questions and explore collaboration.

Purpose

To Make Exchange Useful

Our interest extends from creative work to the decisions, teaching approaches and contexts that shape it.

We seek to support conversations and collaborative activity that help participants understand different methods, frame clearer questions and identify useful directions for their own work and learning.

A useful exchange can begin with a material, a teaching question, a place or a shared concern. It grows through careful discussion, reciprocal learning and an understanding of what each person can contribute.

Vision

Ideas Across Borders

A creative community in which ideas can travel across borders while retaining an understanding of the people, places and practices behind them.

We welcome perspectives from artists, designers, educators, researchers and cultural institutions. A shared question, a teaching experience or a work in progress can provide a starting point for something others can understand, share and develop further.

Our directions

Three Areas of Development

University Exchange and Art and Design Education

Teaching conversations, workshops, critiques and exchanges that connect learning with creative practice.

Exhibition Planning and International Exchange

Presentations and conversations that connect works with their makers, audiences and cultural contexts.

Design Competition and Awards Services

Support for the development of competition information, participant communication, review processes and the presentation of results.

Research, interviews and publications can support documentation and shared learning across these areas. Each proposed activity should establish its purpose, audience, responsibilities, resources and participation requirements before it is announced as a confirmed programme.

How we work

Our Approach

Context

We value discussion of the circumstances behind a work or idea, including its cultural references, intended audience and practical constraints.

Reciprocal Learning

We seek formats in which participants can contribute knowledge and questions, listen carefully and learn from different interpretations.

Clear Participation

We want the purpose of each initiative, the roles of those involved and the ways to take part to be easy to understand.

Thoughtful Documentation

We value records that explain what was explored, acknowledge contributions and make the learning useful beyond a single encounter.

From a question to a shared purpose

Developing Ideas Together

A clear question, a practical intention and an understanding of each participant’s contribution can help turn an idea into a useful proposal.
